It will not run in a Virtual hypervisor (VMWare / XEN) the driver support for tape drives functions only in the Guest Operating system, not in the hypervisor 1.3 Problems fixed: - See change history for details 1.4 Level of Recommendations and Prerequisites for the update: - None 1.5 Dependencies: - None 2.0 Installation and setup instructions ________________________________________ This package can be used with several of IBM's update management tools, including IBM UpdateXpress Manager, IBM UpdateXpress System Packs, and IBM Director. This package does not work with VMWare or XEN. It can also be used as a standalone executable package. To use the package with one of IBM's update management tools, follow the instructions that came with your specific management tool. 2.1 Standalone usage instructions --------------------------------- As a standalone package, this executable can be used in the following ways: - to update the tape drive FW on the local system Updating the local system: - Type "./ibm_fw_tape_dds-1.1_linux_32-64.bin -s" at a command prompt. 2.2 Troubleshooting tips ------------------------ Linux 2.4 Kernels ----------------- Tapedrv relies on the SCSI generic (sg) driver to communicate with all backup devices. By convention, the sg device file names are /dev/sg0, /dev/sg1, ... In 2.4 kernels, the sg driver creates the text file /proc/scsi/sg/device_strs. Device_strs lists device Inquiry Data. Each 'device_strs' line corresponds to a /dev/sg. If a 2.4 kernel '/proc/scsi/sg/device_strs' file is not present, then try to load the 'sg' module using the command # modprobe sg If an ATAPI tape drive is not detected, type the following sequence of commands, from a Linux console, to make ATAPI tapes visible to the sg driver, and thus tapedrv. # rmmod ide-tape # rmmod ide-scsi # modprobe ide-scsi # modprobe st If an ATAPI DVD drive is not detected, type the following sequence of commands, from a Linux console, to make ATAPI DVD drives visible to the sg driver, and thus tapedrv. # rmmod ide-cd # modprobe ide-scsi # modprobe sr_mod More information on Linux IDE and SCSI systems related to tape and CD/DVD drivers is found by searching the internet for: Linux 2.4 SCSI subsystem HOWTO 9.2. CDROM driver (sr or scd) or visiting: http://tldp.org/HOWTO/SCSI-2.4-HOWTO/sr.html You can verify the presence of tape or DVD (and other SCSI) devices using the commands # more /proc/scsi/sg/device_strs -and- # more /proc/scsi/scsi Some Linux 2.4 kernels have a known driver bug that causes SCSI error messages to be displayed during backup device detection. Normally, this does not affect the firmware update operation and can be ignored. If firmware update shows a failed status and the console shows 'parity errors', this is usually a result of a failure to renegotiate SCSI Synchronous Data Transfer, immediately after the update completes, by either the host adapter or SCSI driver. The firmware update is not affected. Linux 2.6 Kernels ----------------- In 2.6 kernels, the sg driver creates text files of the following form: /sys/class/scsi_generic/sg/device/{vendor,model,rev} 2.3 Limitations ------------------------ - No VMWare / Virtual hypervisor support (VMWare / XEN) This package runs under Linux. It will not run in a Virtual hypervisor (VMWare / XEN) the driver support for tape drives functions only in the Guest Operating system, not in the hypervisor 3.0 Configuration information ______________________________ - None 4.0 Unattended Mode ____________________ To run this package in unattended mode, use the following command: ./ibm_fw_tape_dds-1.1_linux_32-64.bin -s 5.0 Web Sites and Support Phone Numbers 5.1 Web sites IBM Support Web Site: http://www-03.ibm.com/servers/eserver/support/xseries/index.html IBM IntelliStation Web site: http://www.ibm.com/pc/intellistation/ IBM xSeries Tape Files http://www-304.ibm.com/jct01004c/systems/support/supportsite.wss/docdisplay?lndocid=TAPE-FILES&brandind=5000019 5.2 Software service and support -------------------------------- Through IBM Support Line, you can get telephone assistance, for a fee, with usage, configuration, and software problems with xSeries servers, IntelliStation workstations, and appliances.
